International Processes

Various international agreements deal with the topic of sustainable tourism and provide standards how to make future tourism development more sustainable. Standards and guidelines are targeting governments, the tourism industry as well as nongovernmental organisations (NGOs).

Among the most important international processes regarding sustainable tourism development are:

• the Work programme on sustainable tourism development of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD)
• the CBD Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development
• different initiatives concerning social responsibility in tourism.

These standards, guidelines and programmes form an important basis for the work of ETE.
