Association for sustainable tourism development

Fostering sustainable tourism as a perspective for the future

Duration:April 2005 - April 2008
Description: The aim of this project is to research how commitments, created in and ratified through international conventions and agreements, regarding sustainable tourism development are being implemented in Germany. In addition to this research, activities and action which clarify sustainable tourism will be initiated and carried out in the field of politics and in the tourism industry. These activities are an attempt to familiarise these two areas with the field of sustainable tourism. At the same time, the project aims to promote sustainable tourism, increasing the consumers' awareness and acceptance of the concept and informing them about what sustainable tourism has to offer.
The project has three main areas of focus. These are:

  • The implementation of international agreements: International agreements, concerning the implementation of a sustainable tourism development, will be described and communicated within the field of politics, to the tourism industry and also to German NGO's. This will be supplemented by recommendations stating what actions should be taken for future development.

  • Exchange with nature, environmental, leisure and consumer associations, who are engaged in the area of sustainable tourism. The aim of this exchange is to collect and to group the positive initiatives and concrete products of these associations and to present these to experts and to travellers. Additionally, joint actions to call for the implementation of a sustainable tourism in politics and the tourism industry, the production of joint publications where necessary, the adoption of positions and the building of new partnerships are foreseen.

  • Consumer information: The preparation and supply of information about sustainable travel as well as concrete tips and suggestions for environmentally friendly and socially equitable tourism products and suppliers from the tourism industry and associations in Germany.
